The story of Into The Wild is unlike any other that has been told in books or cinema before and Penn directs an intriguing depiction of a young person who lived his life outside the box and who wasn't afraid to be different. His adventure is one that he takes alone and ultimately takes him to Alaska, where he is defeated by the harsh and unforgiving wilderness that lives far away from civilization. The movie follows McCandless as he has unique and impromptu adventures all throughout the American west, meeting like minded souls along the way, but always leaving on his way before bonding too closely with anyone. The film starts his decision to leave after his college graduation, his fights and at times contemptuous relationship with his parents, and his close bond with his sister, played in the movie by Jena Malone, who also narrates the film. Instead, the movie focuses primarily on his journey in getting to Alaska. While the story is best known for Chris McCandless' trip and ultimate death in Alaska, so little is known about his time there because his journal from that time lists little else aside from the game that he killed and the food that he ate while in Alaska. The result has been the telling of an incredible story by Penn with actor Emile Hirsch playing the lead role of Chris McCandless, in a movie that brings out strong reactions from every viewer who watches it. Film director Sean Penn waited ten years to make this movie, waiting for permission from the McCandless family to put Chris' story on the big screen.
The story of McCandless's trip that ended tragically with his death in Alaska was first brought to the public's attention in a book of the same name by Jon Krakour. McCandless hitchhiked and lived off the land with the ultimate goal of going off to live in the Alaskan wilderness to truly test himself.
